If you’ve never heard of shawarma, it’s skewered seasoned meat that is roasted rotisserie style. The meat is shaved off and served in either an opened up piece of pita or rolled in flat bread pita like a wrap. Of course this sandwich doesn't compare to the authentic one eaten off the streets of Egypt, but hey, it is still really good and one you should try.
Don't forget the tahini!
I had intended to bake whole wheat pita bread to serve the shawerma in, but I ran out of time and had to use store bought pita for tonight's meal. I should have planned to make both the shawerma and homemade pita on the weekend when I would have had enough time to prepare both. Opps, oh well. I will make the homemade whole wheat pita bread this weekend and then you can bake the bread to go along with this wonderful recipe below:
1.5 lbs, thick NY strip steak, sliced
1 medium yellow onion, sliced
1 green pepper, chopped
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup lemon juice
3 large cloves garlic, minced
2 bay leaves
2 cinnamon sticks
4 cracked cardamom pods or substitute with ¼ tsp ground cardamom
3 tsp seven spice
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a Pyrex and cover with foil. Let marinate overnight in the refrigerator. Place in 400 degree preheated oven for 40 minutes, covered with foil. Remove foil and cook for an additional 20 minutes. Serve on flat bread pita with tahini sauce.
