Hawawshi

"Savory meat filled pita"

Ingredients:
Serves 2 or 3

1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 Roma tomato, diced
1/4 cup parsley, chopped
1/2 jalapeno (or a whole one if you want more heat), diced with seeds
1 small green bell pepper, diced
1/2 tsp all spice
1/4 - 1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt

6 pita bread halves
olive oil
Italian seasoning

Directions:
With clean hands, mix the ground beef with the onion, garlic, tomato, parsley, jalapeno, bell pepper, and spices. Divide the meat mixture inside each bread half and spread all way to the edges and make an even layer.

Brush the bread on each side with olive oil then sprinkle with Italian seasoning.

Wrap each half in parchment paper (or aluminum foil but I find that when I use foil, the bread sticks)

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Put the hawawshi on a baking sheet and cook for 30-40 minutes until the meat is cooked through and the bread is crispy. Unwrap from the paper (usually one side is more crip than the other). Flip to the side that needs more browning. Cook on the baking sheet uncoverd for a few more minutes then serve immediately with tahina.
